Some islands capture your attention the moment you arrive.
Others take a little longer.
Chios belongs to the second kind.
It's not an island of luxury resorts or crowded beaches. It doesn't try to impress you. Instead, it quietly reveals itself through its medieval villages, hidden coves, family tavernas and the people you'll meet along the way.
The more time you spend here, the more you realise that Chios isn't a place you simply visit.
It's a place you return to.
If I had just a few days to show you the island, this is where I'd take you.

Where I'd EatOne of the best ways to discover Chios is around a table.
Long lunches by the sea, fresh fish, local recipes and conversations that last longer than expected are all part of the experience.
Three places are always on my list.
Pantoukios is one of them. Sitting by the water with fresh seafood and a glass of wine, it's exactly how a summer afternoon in Greece should feel.
For exceptional seafood, Ichthyoskala is another favourite. Simple, authentic and focused on the freshest catch of the day.
If you're staying around Karfas, don't miss Karatzas Taverna. It's one of those places locals continue returning to year after year, and after one visit, you'll understand why.

Beaches Worth Waking Up Early ForEveryone has a favourite beach in Chios.
Mine is Glari.
It's a tiny bay with unbelievably clear water and one of the island's most beautiful beach bars.
There is only one piece of advice.
Arrive early.
Very early.
By mid-morning, almost every spot has already been taken.
For something completely different, spend a few hours at Mavra Volia, one of Greece's most unique beaches, famous for its smooth black volcanic pebbles and crystal-clear sea.
If you prefer an organised beach with cafés and beach bars, Karfas Beach is perfect for spending an entire day by the water.

Villages That Feel Frozen in TimeNo visit to Chios is complete without wandering through Pyrgi and Mesta.
The geometric black and white façades of Pyrgi are unlike anything else in Greece, while the narrow stone alleys of Mesta still feel almost exactly as they did centuries ago.
Don't follow a map.
Get lost.
Those unexpected turns often become your favourite memories.

Don't Leave Without Trying These
​Before leaving Chios, there are two things you simply have to take with you.
The first is the famous tsoureki from Peris.
Soft, fragrant and impossible to resist.
Whether it actually makes it home untouched is another story.
The second is the island's traditional masourakia from Avgoustakis.
Most visitors buy a box.
Most wish they had bought two.
